Winterton

Winterton - Gateway to the Central Drakensberg.

The town Winterton is situated in beautiful foothills of the Drakensberg in South Africa and is main access point to the Central Drakensberg. This typical pioneer settlement offers a very relaxed atmosphere. Originally known as Springfield, the tree-lined village on the banks of the Little Thukela was renamed in 1910. It serves the large community of maize, wheat and beef farmers and of late has become a tourist attraction offering everything from accommodation to adventure activities in the Drakensberg region.

In 1905 the Natal government constructed a weir across the Little Tugela River, leading to the foundation of an irrigation settlement called Springfield, later renamed Winterton in honour of HD Winter, the then Natal Secretary for Agriculture. Situated in the foothills of the Cathedral Peak area, Winterton is within close range of all the Central ‘Berg resorts and attractions.

Winterton Museum

Situated in Kerk Street, the museum has as it’s main theme the geology, fauna and flora of the Drakensberg. Secondary themes are the history of farms in the area, the bushmen and other early inhabitants of the area, and Anglo Boer War battles, which took place nearby. The museum is open to the public on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and on Saturday mornings
