| Location: South Africa » Kwazulu Natal » Natal Midlands » Midlands Meander » Nottingham Road In April 1884 it was decided to build a church at Nottingham Road. John King gave the land and the little wood and iron church of St Johns Gowrie opened in February 1885. John King stipulated that the church should be available to all denominations and it was used for many years by the Anglicans before All Saints was built. This galvanised iron has withstood 125 years. The total cost of building the church was 232 Pounds. As with many churches of the time, finances were a problem. John King suggested that door collections be obtained for the purpose of defraying the expense of an organ for the new church. In the meantime, Janet King's little harmonium was used for the services. This meant that services could not start until the King family and the Lynedoch wagon arrived at the church. In the grounds of the church, near the entrance gate, is a memorial to the men of the district, who died during the First World War, erected by the people of the Nottingham Road district and unveiled on 26th Jan 1992.
