With the railway having opened up in the area, a small hotel and a store was built on the site later occupied by George Nicol's Blacksmith shop, present site of Mt West Bottle Store, but it didn't last long.  In 1889 George Orwin brought the site of the present Nottingham Road Hotel and erected the Railway Hotel as it was originally named.

The hotel, which was completed at the beginning of 1891, was built by C. Morgan.  This building was to suffer a fire some time before the Second Anglo Boer War, but it was restored.  This hotel is renowned for the mystical presence that roams the hotel late at night, rearranging flower arrangements, turning down beds and running up and down the wooden platforms at night.  She is believed to pay particular attention to room No. 10.
