For nature lovers the mountain or wilderness hikes will be a memorable experience. Birders will enjoy rare sightings unique to this area. Of course there are many more activities at ekuThuleni.

Our comfortable self-catering cottages, spaced apart for privacy, are fully equipped and can sleep from two to eight people. They have magnificent views of the mountains. All you will need to bring is your food, drink and charcoal for the braai.

ekuThuleni, which in Zulu, means Place of Peace, is exactly that. With only 5 cottages on over 80 hectares of land, one can imagine the amount of space, and peace. Our cottages have been positioned as far apart as practically possible to offer maximum privacy without compromising the superb panoramic views, which in our opinion is what makes ekuThuleni so special.

ekuThuleni is conveniently situated on the Drakensberg Gardens road (tarred), just 12 kms from Underberg, where most supplies and conveniences can be obtained.

Lying on the banks of the crystal clear Mzimkulu River with the majestic Southern Drakensberg rising to 3482m as a backdrop, ekuThuleni offers its guests the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy pristine nature at its best.

Gatehouse has 4 bedrooms, sleeps 10, and is the largest of our cottages.

The cottage has a spacious comfortable lounge area with open jetmaster-type fireplace, fully equipped open-plan kitchen with dining table, electric stove and microwave oven.

A large covered wooden deck, complete with braai facilities is the perfect setting for a sundowner, giving full panoramic views of ekuThuleni and surrounding areas, with the magnificent Southern Drakensberg Mountains as a backdrop.

Mvuleni has 1 bedroom and an open plan mezzanine sleeping area and is the largest of our thatched cottages, sleeping 7.

imPunzi is a large open-plan thatched cottage that sleeps 5.

Outside, the cottage has a wooden deck, with braai facilities. It overlooks a small dam where our resident reedbuck can often be spotted coming down for an evening drink.

uMziki is a thatched cottage which sleeps 4

Hot water, fridge and cooking facilities utilise gas and the lighting is powered by solar charged batteries. The cottage has a comfortable open-plan lounge/fully-equipped kitchen, dining area, jetmaster-type open fireplace, all together making it a very attractive cosy cottage that you won’t want to leave.

Attractions

We are only 30km from Sani Pass, which is a must for first-time visitors to the area. The pass takes you right up the Drakensberg and tops out in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Tours operate each day of the week, which we can arranged on request. If you have a 4 x 4 - and remember your passports!!!! - you can take a drive up yourselves, which is not too difficult or dangerous (depending on weather).

If it is hiking that you are after, ekuThuleni has over 6km of beautiful, not too taxing walks along the riverbank and surrounding hills (see if you can find the cave paintings!). If you are looking for something a little more adventurous, we have Garden Castle Nature Reserve just up the road or the easier hiking of Cobham, just down the road near Himeville. These are entrances to the Ukahlamba Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage Site. Maps of the local hiking trails are available upon request at our office.

The Underberg area is regarded as one of the best trout fishing locations in South Africa and at ekuThuleni you will have an opportunity to put your skills to the test on our 2km of prime uMzimkulu river frontage (closed for fishing 1st May - 30th August). Our guests get preferential rates for all dams under the control of the Undergberg/Himeville Trout Flyfishing Club.

If golf is your preference, there are 3 courses in the vicinity, Drakensberg Gardens Hotel, Sani Pass Hotel and the Underberg Country club (at the Underberg Country Club our guests will be offered good discounts).

Probably the best feature of ekuThuleni (next to the breathtaking views and spacious comfortable cottages) is our 2 km of uMzimkulu river frontage which borders the south side of the property. This particular section of river is ideal for swimming, flyfishing, tubing and /or to braai/picnic and just laze on its banks, all within the boundaries of ekuThuleni.
