Welcome to Thatchings; a jewel in the necklace that is the Midlands Meander! Thatchings is a Country Style Guest House located 10kms from Nottingham Road in the KwaZulu- Natal Midlands, and just a short 2 kms from the N3 ( the major route between Johannesburg and Durban) It is part of the Midlands Meander; one of South Africa’s premier arts and crafts routes.

Thatchings lies in a beautiful setting of ancient pine trees, rolling lawns, azalea shrubs and hydrangeas which overlook a picturesque trout dam. The guest house has title to five hectares of land and is completely surrounded by 300 ha of private game estate. With no fences to inhibit them, impala, zebras, wildebeest and duikers frequently wander onto the property, which makes for an uplifting experience for guests.

Thatchings is located 10kms from Nottingham Road in the glorious KwaZulu-Natal Midlands situated 2kms from the N3 (the major route between Johannesburg and Durban. Part of the delightful Midlands Meander: South Africa's premier arts and crafts route.

Thatchings offers a variety of en-suite accommodation, all under traditional African thatch, such as a Bridal/Executive suite, Junior suite or Standard luxury rooms.

The rooms are tastefully furnished in country style and provided with goose-down duvets and heaters to ward off winter's chill, magazines, TV and tea/coffee-making facilities to make your stay comfortable.

A full English breakfast is included in the tariff and this can be enjoyed either on the patio overlooking the trout dam or in our dining room.

Accommodation

Room 1

Thatchings offers a variety of en-suite accommodation, all under traditional African thatch, such as a Bridal/ Executive suite, junior suite or standard luxury rooms.

The rooms are tastefully furnished in country style and provided with goose down duvets and heaters to ward off the winters chill. Magazines, TV and tea/ coffee making facilities to make guests feel comfortable and at home are standard in all the suites as well as electric blankets for those wintry mornings.

Large family room with a double bed and 2 single beds. There is a full en-suite bathroom with bath, shower and loo.

Room 3

Upstairs twin bedroom with 2 single beds. There is an open plan en-suite bathroom with separate loo.

Upstairs twin bedroom with 2 single beds. There is an open plan en-suite bathroom with separate loo.

Room 5

Junior Suite. Large luxury suite situated privately in the garden. There is a double bed and luxury full en-suite bathroom.

Room 6

This is a 2 bedroom unit with a full luxury en- suite bathroom. The first room has a double bed and other 2 singles.

This twin room is situated in the main house and has 2 single beds. There is a luxury en- suite shower, basin and loo.

This is a very large luxury suite with a four poster double bed and private lounge area. The large luxury en suite bathroom has a spa bath, his and hers basins, shower and loo.

Attractions

Thatchings is a quiet gentle place to ease mind, body and soul.

Take a walk in the 300ha private game estate and you may well see zebras, black wildebeest, eland, red hartebeest, impalas, waterbuck, duiker, reed buck, blesbuck and monkeys, just to name a few. Abundant bird-life ensures that no walk is without seeing something of the fauna of this beautiful region.

Settle into the lounge with its magical view or curl up at a roaring log fire in the guest lounge on those cold or misty days.

Thatchings is perfectly situated for exploring the surrounding area with its wealth of experiences. There is easy access to the Drakensberg, Zulu and Boer War battlefields, golf courses and large dams for water-sports just to name a few.

Scrumptious dinners are available by prior arrangement from our a la carte menu.
A light lunch menu is available either on the veranda overlooking our beautiful dams or in the dining room.

Enjoy your favourite sun downer on the veranda or in front of the log fire in the lounge.
Settle into the lounge with its magical view or curl up at a roaring log fire in the guest lounge on those cold or misty days.

We are fully licensed and have a great pub and games room.
A wide selection of wines is available for dinner as well as a light lunch menu.

Directions

From Johannesburg: Take the N3 towards Durban. When you pass through the Mooi toll plaza take the Nottingham Road offramp. At T-junction turn left onto the Curry's Post Road and travel 2kms on gravel road. Thatchings is on the right. From Durban: Take the N3 inland. Take the Nottingham Road offramp. At T-junction turn left and go over the Freewayonto the Curry's Post Road and drive 2kms on the gravel road and Thatchings is on the right.
